How to Build Credit
- Open Your Own Credit Card
Open a credit card with Sunmark and make payments on time. Opening a credit card and consistently making on-time payments demonstrates responsible credit management to lenders. Because even one late payment can negatively impact a credit score, it is important to stay current with all required payments. - Maintain a Low Balance
Keeping credit utilization below 30% of the available credit limit can help show lenders that credit is being used responsibly. For example, with a $1,000 credit limit, it is best to keep the balance below $300 whenever possible. - Use Credit Strategically
While it is important to keep balances low, using the card consistently for manageable purchases can help build a positive credit history. Smaller recurring expenses, such as gas or dining purchases, may be good options, especially if the card offers rewards for those categories.
